Small businesses less optimisitc

by ShannonCherry on March 12th, 2008

Several recent surveys are showing that small business owners and entrepreneurs areoh no! A recession pessimistic about the near future and the economy.

The National Federation of Independent Business index and the Discover Financial Small Business Watch survey both indicate that many small businesses are starting to feel the pinch, and they are experiencing cash flow problems.

Those surveyed also fear that a weak economy means less consumer demand and could hurt small businesses the most. That would mean less risk-taking and less expansion.

So are you feeling pessimistic? What do you suggest to keep small businesses afloat during a recession?

Although customers cut back, they don’t cut out. I mean, if they go to a restaurant, instead of eating fish a $25 they may go for the chicken instead at $ 17. Just have to find new ways of attracting customers who are still willing to spend but not in the same way as before.

    - And, from what I have been reading, you don’t have to cut down on the price of the chicken at $17, but just make a point of showing customers that you definetly have this on offer and it tastes really good.

Being flexible and open to new ideas is probably the best way to stay afloat during a recession. Like Eamon was saying, people are still spending, just in different ways.

Over the last month, I’ve noticed a drop in the number of private music students my business serves. So I’ve shifted my gears a bit and started offering one-time, low-cost musical workshops–and people are interested! It’s all about understanding what your target clients are interested in, and how they spend.

    Thanks for the great article!
