Lather. Rinse. Repeat. Don’t change what’s working.

by ShannonCherry on January 31st, 2008

I’ll admit it. I get bored sometimes with my marketing efforts.

And often, because I’m tired of something I’ll start tinkering with it. But then I’ll stop, and remind myself of a lesson learned long ago.
I used to do PR for Minolta.  And during my work their they changed their famous tagline “From the minds of Minolta” to something else, which to this day I can’t remember.

And you know what happened? People didn’t get it. (Obviously, I didn’t either because I don’t remember it!) And soon, one of the top camera makers who was developing innovative digital cameras so lost market share - and eventually got sold to another company quite cheaply.

But it happens all the time. We take something that works, such as an ad, and change it, because we think ‘it’s time’.  Keep using systems, marketing, etc. that work until they stop working or you find a better way to do it.

So when I’m bored, I know think perhaps I need to change my hair style instead.

Marketing is definitely a skill that has to be kept up on. I couldn’t believe my eyes last night when myspace was advertising that you could watch all the Super Bowl commercials on their site. I remember when myspace was just starting out and now it’s huge and able to afford a commercial slot during the Super Bowl! Like that old saying, “Don’t fix it if it ain’t broken”. I just say adapt to your needs and situation and see what results you receive.
