It takes time.

by ShannonCherry on May 14th, 2008

I heard it again. And now it’s beginning to tick me off!

It’s the idea that an entrepreneur is an ‘overnight’ success.  And the media seems to use it those phrases quite liberally.

growing a businessBut I am here to tell you: it’s just NOT true.

It takes a lot of time and a lot of effort; there will be a ton of roadblocks and learning curves along the way.

And that’s okay.  No one is an overnight success. It takes time.

You need to focus and tweak before you present yourself -and your business - to the world.

A quote I love about this is by Diana Rankin, a writer and public speaker:

“It takes 20 years of hard work to become an overnight success.”

And I totally agree, maybe not always 20 years, but you get the idea.

I sometimes forget that since the day I got my first client I have never gone a month without a client. I am not yet where I want to be in my business, but I have been steadily growing. I need to look at my “gratitude list” more often.

“It takes 20 years of hard work to become an overnight success.” My favorite example of that is from my teenage years in Britain. In 1984 the readers of one music magazine voted ZZ Top the “Best New Band”. They were kinda new to the British, at least to teenagers, but this was a band that had played gigs with Jimi Hendrix in the sixties! It took two decades for them to become “the best new band”! I’m sure they would advise business owners to keep on rockin’ even in the lean years…
