Business costs worrying small business owners
New research released from the National Federation of Independent Business (
NFIB) shows the top concerns among small business owners are business costs.
The group surveyed 3,530 small business owners who said they are particularly worried about costs that are difficult to control including health insurance costs, energy costs and inflation.
Those surveyed were also worried about tax issues, including federal taxes on business income, property tax (real, inventory or personal property), tax complexity and state taxes on business income.
Tax complexity, a new problem on this year’s survey, ranks fifth on the survey and is a ‘critical problem’ for 23 percent of business owners.

I admit that from time to time I fall into the funk of worrying about my business and listening to the press too much but then I remember some of the things that drove me crazy when I didn’t have my own business and the immense since of insecurity I felt when I was laid off, not because I was doing anything wrong but because times got rough or new leadership decided to shake things up.
Then I have a greater sense of security by remembering that I’m not really “working for myself” but rather I am working for a LOT of people. A diversified portfolio of employment if you will. Another encouraging thought I have is I have a LOT more freedom to explore innovative ways to do things and to be flexible.
Am I concerned about rising gas, food and other prices? Yes of course but I’m happier being in a situation where I can react positively to instead of being on the receiving end of negative decisions.
