Are you really sure you want to start your own business?

by ShannonCherry on January 28th, 2008

I was reading a story at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and I was surprised by the comments of the person interviewed, Paul Stappas.

When thinking about starting a business, he suggested that you should  try to convince yourself why you shouldn’t.  His reasoning: it will help you realize the potential issues and risks involved with your business idea.

Well, yes - and no.  Although I always believe you should plan for the negative - just in case, thinking your business might not work is a bad idea.

A very long time ago, I had wanted to be a Broadway star. But my parents, in their infinite wisdom, insisted I go on to college and get a ‘useful’ degree. The dutiful daughter I am (ha!), I actually did what they said. After all, it’s always good to have a back-up, right?

Now, looking back, I realize that I wasn’t as passionate in my career choice - so much so that I talked myself out of what I wanted to do. I think if I had focused and felt that I could make it, I would have.

Not that I am unhappy now. But the point is that if you don’t believe your business will work - or talk yourself out of it, it simply won’t work.

What do you think?

We all have dreams and hopes but reality has to set in at some point. Take me for example, I so want to own my own business but not sure what. In the mean time, I work a full time job in a doctor office while playing around online to see what or where to start. I will never let me dreams get crushed but while I wait for success, I will be like the average Joe and work a regular 9 to 5 job to pay my bills. Follow your heart and be happy. Nobody else can tell you what to like or do, this is on you to make yourself happy in life!
